Sumire Ito, a native of Japan, began her ballet training at the Hamamatsu City Ballet. She attended The Washington School of Ballet’s Summer Intensives in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, she joined the Atlantic City Ballet after one year as a trainee with The Washington Ballet. During her four years at Atlantic City Ballet, Sumire quickly rose to performing principal roles, such as Carmen in Carmen, Lucy in Dracula, Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty. In Japan, she danced the principal roles of Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker and Odette in Swan Lake at the Hamamatsu City Ballet. Sumire has completed in the Japan Grand Prix Ballet Competition and the Crea All-Japan Ballet Competition.
Now in her fifth season with City Ballet of San Diego, Sumire has performed the lead roles in The Firebird, Giselle, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Tchai Celebration, Requiem, Straw Feet, Le Corsaire Pas de Deux, La Bayadere, Rhapsody in Blue, Don Quixote, the company’s premiere of Peter Martins’ Ash, and George Balanchine’s Apollo, La Baiser De La Fee, Donezetti Variations, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, The Four Temperaments and Walpurgisnacht Ballet.
